The Making of the 'Coming Soon' Collection

There is an almost post-apocalyptic feeling to the collection.

‘Coming Soon’ explores the tension between old & new; the subject of each artwork is a forgotten urban landmark standing still while the lives of those who once inhabited them have since long moved on.

The artworks were created to initially feel impersonal to the viewer. The subjects are buildings suspended in time, lacking signs of human life.

Looking closer though, Lance has injected subtle suggestions that there is life behind the walls. Pulled back curtains, vertical blinds revealing hints of what’s inside, momentos left on windowsills - these invite the viewer to keep looking, reveal a little more of the story slowly over time.

The technique of reverse painting & transferring onto glass produces artworks that feel uniquely dreamlike & nostalgic.

Drawing on over 15 years of sign painting, Lance’s artwork utilises historic techniques once popular amongst Australian sign painters over a century ago. These techniques have now largely disappeared from modern practice.

The original works were created by oil painting the subjects in reverse & then transferring to glass to be finished with gold leaf gilding. You might spot examples of this technique in few remaining antique beer mirror artworks at a handful of pubs around Australia.

The original pieces contain gilded mirror finishes in the sky of each artwork. The artworks available on Steady Store are instead finished with soft tonal skies to compliment the nostalgic subjects.

The ‘Coming Soon’ collection took over 9 months to create, with individual artworks taking anywhere between 2-3 weeks to execute using the time-intensive reverse painting & gilding techniques.

The original works from the Coming Soon collection were created & sold in a solo exhibition at Saint Cloche Gallery in Paddington, in November 2025.

The prints of these pieces are available exclusively from the Steady Store website, they are gallery-quality pieces printed from a Canon Fine Art Printer using 12 Colour Pigment Ink for superior colour richness.
